Pepys House in Brampton is one of few Grade I listed buildings located in the Huntingdonshire area. It is a prime example of a yeoman’s cottage from the second half of the 16th century, with alterations carried out in the 17th and 18th centuries.

It was originally owned by Pepys’ uncle, Robert, who was probably employed as a bailiff by the Montagus at the neighbouring Hinchingbrooke estate, whence hailed the diarist’s patron, Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich. After Robert’s death the house was inherited by his brother (Samuel’s father) John who lived there with Samuel’s sister, Paulina. Although Pepys never lived there permanently himself, he would often visit Brampton and regularly send his wife there for long stays.

After Pepys’s death his heir and nephew, John Jackson (Paulina’s son), let the house to a succession of tenants. Later in the 18th century, under unknown circumstances, the house was “absorbed” into the Hinchingbrooke estate.
In 1927 the 9th Earl granted a 99 year lease to the Samuel Pepys Club which commissioned the Scottish architect WA Forsyth to restore the house. His work had a considerable impact and is an important part of the history of the building. The Club continued to let Pepys House, the first tenant being the poet John Drinkwater. In 1963 six acres of surrounding meadowland were purchased freehold to maintain the site’s integrity and, in 1971, the Club’s leasehold was transferred to a charitable trust.
In 2017, thanks to generous personal loans from members of the Club, the Trustees were able to acquire the freehold of the house themselves to ensure public access to the only extant abode associated with Pepys is maintained in perpetuity. An options appraisal has also been undertaken to help identify a viable vision for increasing future access to the house. A major fundraising appeal will be launched when a clear strategy exists. Meanwhile the loans have to be repaid or refinanced by mid-2019.

Pepys House is currently let by the Trustees to Mark and Jenny Quayle.

As always we are privileged to have the singers of Tapestry mixed-voice, a-cappella chamber choir performing.
